Jacob Riis Photo and Comment: In a seven-cent lodging house

This Jacob Riis photo describes one way immigrants lived. From the photo, their sleeping conditions were not  comfortable because their bunks looked like this. They had to sleep on top of each other and there was no space. Can you imagine being in a cramped room like this or laying on or under another person on this bunk? There's no privacy and it's just a bad situation all around. I can only think of the children when I look at something like this, how did they survive? The rooms were so filthy and the surroundings were just as worse. Because of their income they can't afford a decent living, so this is all they can afford. Over the years living conditions have gotten better all over the world, but there are still places that need a lot of improvement.
